Reality Check: Striking 'U' Workers

Every University worker gets the annual wage hike, but not every worker gets that step increase for career advancement.
Striking workers say the University's wage offer doesn't even keep up with
inflation. Can that be true?
It's only PARTLY TRUE. The
University offered hikes of 2.25 percent per year for some workers and 2.5 percent for others. That is lower than inflation.
But most University
workers also get another pay hike on the anniversary of their hiring called a step increase. And when those are combined, it is a pay hike higher than inflation.
But that's NOT THE WHOLE STORY. Every worker gets the annual wage hike, but not every worker gets that step increase for career advancement.
So you're treated differently if you are a janitor, a computer technician, a dental assistant or a payroll clerk.
Here's what you NEED TO KNOW about the average striking worker. Average wage: about $16.10 per hour, or $33,000 per year.
That's Reality Check.
