Man Accused In Park Murder Closer To Charges

Sioux Falls, S.D. (AP) ― Officials say the man accused of killing a Minnesota state park employee is closer to facing second-degree murder charges in Minnesota.

Thirty-five year-old Randy Leeroyal Swaney is serving time in South Dakota on a grand theft conviction. He had been slated to be released this month.

The day before his scheduled release, he was indicted in Minnesota for the slaying of 20-year-old Carrie Nelson of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, who was found dead at Blue Mounds State Park, where she worked, in 2001.

South Dakota Parole Board director Ed Ligtenberg says Swaney has now signed a supervision agreement required of parolees, so his parole should proceed as planned. Ligtenberg says Swaney likely will be released in a couple weeks -- and Minnesota authorities are expected to pick him up then.
