'Anarchists' Group Plans Meeting About RNC Protest

Minneapolis (AP) ― With the Republican National Convention a year away, a group of activists who call themselves "anarchists and anti-authoritarians" are already planning their protest strategy.

The group, called the RNC Welcoming Committee, wants to end "capitalism, imperialism, patriarchy and all other forms of hierarchy" and replace it with "direct, participatory democracy," said Bea Bridges, who spoke for the group on Monday.

Bridges said the group would not seek permits to demonstrate during the Republican National Convention, which will be held Sept. 1-4, 2008, in St. Paul. She added that efforts to restrict protesters through permits constituted repression and a "violent threat."

Bridges also showed a video that hinted at confrontational tactics.

The group is planning a private strategy session over Labor Day weekend.

According to an earlier statement on its Web site, the group plans workshops and a bus tour of the Twin Cities on Saturday, a private strategy session on Sunday, and a news conference next Monday.

Darrin Blackford, a spokesman for the Secret Service in Washington, D.C., and Tom Walsh, spokesman for the St. Paul police department, each said they had no comment.

Meanwhile, a coalition of antiwar groups, including Women Against Military Madness, the Anti-War Committee and the Iraq Peace Action Coalition, has announced plans for a mass march on Sept. 1, 2008 near Xcel Center in St. Paul. They say their march will be a peaceful, legal demonstration.

According to GOP.com, the Republican Party was born in the early 1850's by anti-slavery activists and individuals who believed that government should grant western lands to settlers free of charge. In 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected as the first Republican Party president.
