Northwest Pilots Rally In St. Paul
St. Paul (AP) ―
About 160 Northwest Airlines pilots rallied in St. Paul Thursday night and in other Northwest cities around the country.
They're trying to demonstrate strength in advance of a judge's decision on whether Northwest can throw out its union contracts with pilots and flight attendants. That decision is expected Friday.
Northwest Captain Mark McClain says the union and the airline have the beginnings of an agreement on who will fly small jets. He says the framework keeps all flying of jets with 76 to 100 seats with Northwest and provides a way for some flying of smaller jets to be done by non-Northwest pilots.
But McClain says many other issues still remain, including whether pilots will get to own a piece of Northwest after it leaves bankruptcy.

Northwest Airlines was founded in 1926, when it began carrying air mail from the Twin Cities to Chicago on a pair of rented, open-cockpit biplanes. The company began transporting ticketed passengers almost a year later.
