Striking NWA Workers To Rally Monday
St. Paul (AP) ―
Striking Northwest Airlines mechanics will rally at the State Capitol Monday.
Members of the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association are pressing for unemployment benefits and retraining to help them re-enter the work force. They'll gather at noon in the rotunda.
Northwest mechanics went on strike Aug. 19.
A Northwest spokesman said AMFA voted down a contract in December that would have allowed most of them to receive unemployment benefits. He says the most expeditious way for them to get unemployment and retraining benefits would be to end the strike.
Northwest pilots will conduct informational picketing at 4:30 p.m. at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
The pilots have threatened to strike if a bankruptcy judge throws out their contract. The judge has given the carrier and its pilots and flight attendants until the end of the week to come up with new agreements.

Northwest Airlines was founded in 1926, when it began carrying air mail from the Twin Cities to Chicago on a pair of rented, open-cockpit biplanes. The company began transporting ticketed passengers almost a year later.
