NWA Pilots Picketing Today, But Not At MSP
Bloomington, Minn. (WCCO) ―
Northwest Airlines pilots will be conducting informational picketing today at airports in Detroit, Mich.; Memphis, Tenn.; and Anchorage, Alaska.
Planned picketing at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport was postponed due to wind chill advisories, the Air Line Pilots Association said. Picketing at MSP was rescheduled for Feb. 20.
The Air Line Pilots Association, which represents the pilots, says its members are frustrated with Northwest for demanding what the union considers excessive and unreasonable concessions.
Northwest filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September, and is seeking $1.4 billion in annual savings from its labor unions to help it emerge from bankruptcy protection. The airline says it needs to cut labor costs to compete better with low-cost carriers and absorb rising fuel costs.
A judge is set to rule next Friday whether to toss out Northwest's labor contracts.
Pilots are currently voting on whether to authorize a strike if the contracts are nullified. Ballots are to be counted on Feb. 28.
