Machinists: Bankruptcy Filing Bad For Union

Minneapolis (AP) ― A leader of the machinists' union that represents Northwest Airlines's baggage handlers and ticket agents says Northwest's bankruptcy filing bodes bad for the International Association of Machinists.

District 143 President Bobby De Pace says he expects Northwest to lean even harder on its union workers for concessions now that it has filed for Chapter Eleven.

De Pace says his union is expecting the absolute worst because Northwest will have the bankruptcy judge on its side.

Northwest Airlines was founded in 1926, when it began carrying air mail from the Twin Cities to Chicago on a pair of rented, open-cockpit biplanes. The company began transporting ticketed passengers almost a year later.
