Zebra Mussels Discovered In River Impoundment
Brainerd, Minn. (AP) ―
Zebra mussels apparently have made their way into parts of the Upper Mississippi River.
The DNR said a boy cleaning his minnow bucket discovered the invasive species. The bucket had been tied to the family's dock on Rice Lake in Brainerd, Minn.
Rice Lake is an impoundment of the Mississippi River.
DNR zebra mussel coordinator Gary Montz said it's likely that zebra mussels have already become established in other areas of the river or adjacent backwaters, but just haven't been discovered yet.
The DNR said it will step up public education efforts in the Brainerd Lakes area, aimed at preventing further spread of zebra mussels.
