Twins Stadium Design Proposals Unveiled

by Esme Murphy
Minneapolis (WCCO) ― The Hennepin County design committee for the new Minnesota Twins ballpark presented some of the proposals for the proposed stadium at a meeting at the Central Library in Minneapolis. Construction is scheduled to start next summer.

Hennepin County designers and architects stress, unlike the Metrodome, the new stadium will not be an island surrounded by parking lots, though they stress it will still be easy to access. The Design Committee's Chuck Leer says the key will be transportation connections.

"First and foremost, connections to the light rail, to the Cedar Lake trail, which goes to the Chain of Lakes connections, to the sidewalks for walking," said Leer.

Their will also be a major transit hub that would include an extended portion of the Hiawatha Light-Rail Line and a new Northstar commuter rail line from the northern suburbs. New pedestrian bridges will link the stadium to downtown and the warehouse district. Nearly every seat will have a view of the downtown skyline.

While this meeting focused on the outside, many fans here want more displays and attractions on the inside. The architects stressed that the ballpark will be part of a transformation of the area. You'll also see walkways, bike paths, new condos and stores.

They say there should be enough parking near the stadium. The only trouble spot that remains to be worked out may be the issue of day games, when the city is already filled with people working.
