Pet Food Recall, Local Cat Owners Affected
by Lisa Kiava
(WCCO)
A major pet food recall is growing with 40 different brands of cat food and 50 different brands of dog food now part of the recall issued by Menu Foods.
Ten pets have died so far and hundreds of others may be sick.
About a month after starting a new cat food, Amy Lanahan said her cat got very sick. Kidney failure led to the cat being euthanized and now Lanahan has learned her new cat food is on the recall list.
"It's much easier to accept your family pet dying from old age than suffering, you know, watching them suffer and essentially being poisoned," said Lanahan.
Sharon Windseth's kitten became ill and Windseth said the kitten has kidney damage. Windseth said she checked the codes on her cat food and they matched the ones being recalled.
Windseth said so far she has spent $1,500 on vet bills. She wants to make sure others are aware of the recall.
The pet food maker Menu Foods is now gathering information from each pet owner with a sick animal. The company said they started received complaints after they switched suppliers for one ingredient.
Stores have removed the recalled pet food from shelves. The type of product that could be affected is the "cuts and gravy" style pouches and cans, which includes brands like Iams, Nutro and Eukanuba.
Menu Foods said it hasn't found a link explaining the illnesses and deaths. Symptoms that animals are experiencing include vomiting and kidney failure.
