'Last Flagraiser' May Have Center Named After Him

St. Paul (WCCO) ― A World War II hero whose accomplishments were forgotten for years may soon have a veterans' health clinic named in his honor.

Minnesota Senators passed a resolution Thursday, calling on Congress to rename the Rochester (Minn.) Veterans Rehabilitation Center the Cpl. Chuck Lindberg Rehabilitation Center.

Lindberg helped raise the first American flag during the Battle of Iwo Jima. His accomplishment was later overshadowed when a replacement flag was raised a few hours later.

"It came from a group of veterans who said they would really like to have the VA clinic in Rochester named in honor of Cpl. Charles Lindberg," said Sen. Sheila Kiscaden, I-Rochester. "And so we simply decided, that rather than write letters, or do a resolution, that we could take the opportunity to celebrate with him and celebrate all veterans."

Congress will need to approve the name change before it happens.
