Man Shot On I-94 Identified; Was Iraq War Veteran
Alexandria, Minn. (AP) ―
The man who was killed during an exchange of gunfire with police along Interstate 94 was identified Monday as a Sauk Rapids man who served in the Iraq war as part of the Minnesota National Guard.
According to the Douglas County Sheriff's Department, Brian William Skold, 28, was shot Sunday by police officers near the Osakis exit of I-94, about 10 miles east of Alexandria.
On Sunday, police reported that they had received calls around 4:30 a.m. about a man driving armed and impaired. Officers gave chase, and Skold led them through Alexandria and onto the interstate. Police contained Skold near Osakis and Sauk Centre -- using stop sticks -- and tried to negotiate, but shots were fired and he died at the scene.
The sheriff's department didn't release further details.
The Star Tribune of Minneapolis reported that Skold's name was read at the local cemetery in Madison, where he grew up, during a Memorial Day program describing service members who had died in the past year, according to a city official.
A call Monday night to a National Guard spokesman wasn't immediately returned.
