$900K Grant Set For Austin Schools
Austin, Minn. (AP) ―
The Austin, Minn. school district will receive a $900,000 grant to help students become better readers.
The "Reading First" grant is part of the federal No Child Left Behind act.
Austin will receive $300,000 per year for three years. The money will be used to train teachers, allow professional staff from the University of Minnesota to spend time in Austin, pay an in-house literacy coordinator for each of the three years, pay teachers for additional training time, and buy materials.
The program is aimed at staff and students in kindergarten through grade three. The money is focused on schools with high percentages of students reading below grade level and large numbers of poor children.
The funds have been earmarked for the Woodson Kindergarten Center and Neveln Elementary school in Austin.
