The discovery of a criminal defendant stabbed to death in his multi-million dollar Greenwich, N.Y. mansion is yet another chapter in a bizarre international story of jealousy, betrayal and murder.
Andrew Kissel, 46, was out on $1 million bail awaiting trial on federal and state charges of real estate fraud in Manhattan.
Kissel's bloody body was discovered by a moving crew in the basement of the recently sold estate, his ankle-monitoring bracelet still attached. Police believe he was stabbed and are treating it as a homicide.
"There's something a little shady here," said neighbor Shannon Signorini. "I don't think there's a random killer."
It wouldn't be the first murder in the Kissel family. Andrew's brother, Robert, was killed in Hong Kong three years ago. His wife, Nancy Kissel, is serving a life term there for drugging her husband's milkshake and beating him to death with a lead statue amidst their divorce. She is a native of Minneapolis.
Andrew Kissel had been taking care of his murdered brother's three children and their $18 million inheritance before he was charged by the U.S. Attorney and the Manhattan DA.
Now that the millionaire defendant is dead, there will be no trial.
Greenwich police said it appears he died from multiple stab wounds, but it will be up to the medical examiner to determine the exact cause of death. If it was homicide, authorities will have to switch cases -- from prosecuting Andrew Kissel to investigating his murder.
