The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued an air-pollution alert for much of the state as dirty air continues to build in the lower atmosphere.
The agency says air quality from Detroit Lakes southeast to Rochester is considered unhealthy for people with respiratory, cardiovascular and heart conditions, the elderly and children and is approaching a level considered unhealthy for everyone.
MPCA spokesman Mark Sulzbach says improvement isn't expected until at least Friday as stagnant winds are helping to trap fine soot in the air. The agency says the soot is caused by fossil fuel combustion from electricity generation, vehicles, and wood smoke.
Sensitive groups should avoid vigorous or prolonged exercise outdoors and indoors and others should consider reducing or postponing heavy exertion.
The MPCA recommends that people reduce driving and idling, postpone fires and use of small engines, and reduce electricity consumption.
