St. John's Officials Look To Fix Mapping Problems

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (AP) ― If you're looking to find the location of St. John's University in central Minnesota, you're better off asking a local than using mapping software.

Turns out many GPS maps and Internet mapping programs, including Google, give an incorrect location.

Some of the programs will get a visitor onto the campus, but not to the main part. And others even place St. John's on the wrong side of Interstate 94.

Officials at the university and St. John's Abbey are contacting national data companies to fix the problem.

Stearns County officials say outdated information, mathematical plotting and a rural setting have all contributed to the mapping problem. They also say St. John's has private, unnamed roads and some of its buildings have no formal addresses.
