State Fair Sets New Attendance Record

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. (AP) ― More people attended the Minnesota State Fair this year than ever before.

The 2009 fair set an attendance record with nearly 1.8 million people visiting the Great Minnesota Get-Together.

Ideal weather for nearly the entire 12-day run pushed attendance nearly 28,000 above the old record of 1.7 million set in 2001. This year's fair also drew more than 97,000 more guests than last year.

The agricultural and creative competitions drew close to 37,000 entries this year, with competitors vying for a share of ribbons, trophies and more than $900,000 in prize money.

Next year's state fair will run Aug. 26 through Labor Day, Sept. 6.

The first time the State Fair hit more than a million people in attendance was in 1955.
