New At The Fair: Peace On A Stick

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. (WCCO) ― The Peace Pavilion is new to the Minnesota State Fair this year. The tent shop features the iconic peace image on all kinds of things, and is even mindful of the fair.

"These are western shirts and we did these for the kids that are showing over at the coliseum," said co-creator Pam Mondale.

Mondale and her partner came up with the idea.

"I learned that the peace sign turned 50 last year and decided to learn more about where it came from," she added.

Mondale says the symbol was originally commissioned for a single march by a group in London. She says the shape came from a naval alphabet using the letters ND, for "Nuclear Disarmament."

"I would imagine it's the most recognized symbol in all nations and all cultures, across the globe," said Mondale.

Even though Mondale's father-in-law is a well-known liberal and former Vice President, she says her pavilion is not a political statement. Still, the colorful Volkswagen bus has invoked some memories

"We've heard a million great stories, people's experience trying to get to Woodstock, one they got to Woodstock, leaving Woodstock," she said.

But for a new generation, it's much simpler.

"It's definitely the fashion, it's a fashion statement, I believe. In a lot of clothing stores now you see a lot of young people wearing it," said Kassie Benson from Edina.

Peace Pavilion is on Underwood Street across from the Kidway.
