Union Head Teaches Don Shelby About Local Food

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. (WCCO) ― Organic agriculture has grown by 20 percent this year and there are a lot of Minnesota chefs taking advantage of that.

"I make choices about food 365 days a year," said Doug Peterson, President of the Minnesota Farmers Union. "I think they should be healthy, I think they should be fresh and I think they should be Minnesota-grown."

The union sponsors Minnesota Cooks at the Fair, a chance to give people a taste of locally-grown and prepared delicious food.

This is a time to remember the farms and farmers that grow all our food. And thank them with our support.

"Are we seeing something here, a movement toward, whether you use the word 'locavore' or you use the 'community-sustainable agriculture,' buzzwords," asked WCCO-TV anchor Don Shelby, "are we seeing a movement more toward individual farmers, individual gardeners?"

"Yes, there is a movement," said Peterson. "I think, number one, people know, or at least have an attitude, that it's fresher, it's healthier for you. You'll grow better. Those kinds of things, that's out there. That's all the mystique of what I eat."

And there's an idea that buying food locally not only builds the local economy, it builds our community. People getting together to talk about food and share it.
