Golf Tourney Volunteers Actually Pay To Help Out

(WCCO)

Golfers in the U.S. Women's Open couldn't tee off if it weren't for all the folks behind the scenes.

However, the volunteers actually pay the organization in order to lend a helping hand.

Junior volunteers each pay $25 bucks to help out and adults pay $100.

"You get introduced to them and shake their hand," said one volunteer.

"I'm going to be standard barring -- where you carry the sign with the player, and shows the score to the spectators," said Maggie Dobesh, a junior volunteer. "On Friday, I'm standard barring for Annika."

Volunteers had to go through orientation where they were told how to do their jobs and also reminded of what not do to on the course.

"You're not supposed to talk at all, but you just put the score up and watch them," said Mackenzie Sorensen, a junior volunteer.

"When you have your uniform on, you're not supposed to ask for autographs," said Joe Dobesh, another volunteer.

However, there are some nice perks that go along with the volunteer job.

"You get shirts, hats ... free lunch," said Joe Dobesh.

Besides free food, workers can also win a trip to Mexico or get messages, but the best perk has got to be meeting the pros.

"I'm just excited to be a part of the experience -- to get to walk the course and see amazing golfers play," said Emily Dobesh, a junior volunteer.
