After losing Marian Gaborik to free agency, on the same night the Minnesota Wild agreed to terms with Martin Havlat on a 6-year deal.
The right winger scored a career-high 77 points including 29 goals last season with the Chicago Blackhawks.
He is 28 years old and has spent the last three seasons in Chicago. He was expendable there because of the 12-year deal that Chicago signed with Marian Hossa.
"We are excited to add the speed and scoring of Martin Havlat to our lineup," said Wild GM Chuck Fletcher. "He is a terrific two-way player."
The 6-foot-2, 217-pound native of Mlada Boleslav, Czech Republic, has recorded 396 points in 470 NHL games in eight seasons with Ottawa and Chicago.
Havlat was Ottawa's first-round pick (No. 26 overall) in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.
