Superstitious Fans Sweat It Out In Tuesday's Garb

(WCCO) If it wasn't for the delicious French fries, it might really smell at Joe Senser's Bar. At least one table of guys was wearing exactly what they'd worn the night before.

And in some cases, maybe even the same underwear.

"I'm not going to go there," one bar-goer said. "Maybe I have, maybe I haven't. I'm pretty superstitious."

Superstitions are how many of us feel we contribute to the team.

Whether it's not shaving or only wearing glasses, it's what people at home or in the stands can do to make them feel better. Some understand it probably doesn't make a difference to the team.

On Friday night, Dan Walton threw his Twins sweatshirt on the floor of his room. He'll only pick it up to wear it to games.

"It will stay there until the season is over with," he said.

Robb Mitchell claims when he drinks from his Twins coffee mug, the Twins win. When he forgets, they lose. He said it worked earlier in the season.

"That has me spooked out. I have a lot of responsibility on my shoulders," he said.

Mary Stepnick is what you'd call a true Twins fan. She only wears Twins' shortstop Nick Punto gear. And her hat has the big "M."

"I got the away. I prefer the 'M' to the 'TC.' Call me old-fashioned," she said.

At games, she eats a hot dog in the first inning. She eats a malt in the sixth if the team needs a rally. Wooden spoons only, of course.

"I got the plastic spoon once," she said. "It was ugly."

She even uses her superstitions against other teams.

"When we were playing the Royals at home, I threw a black long-sleeved T-shirt underneath for the White Sox to represent," she said.

The Twins' Justin Morneau is also notorious for being superstitious.

According to a 2007 ESPN profile, he eats a Jimmy John's Turkey Tom sandwich – hold the sprouts – before each game at the Metrodome. He also has Punto make him a slurpee with Mountain Dew.
