He could be called the Cornish Game Hawk. Senior Tim Cornish is a ball-hawking, shut-down cornerback for the Bethel Royals.
Cornish is so good he has been named to a pair of D-3 pre-season All-American teams.
His teammates and coaches agree with the hype.
"He's kind of one of those vibrant players. He stands out and makes big plays in the crunch time," said teammate Reid Velo.
"He is a tenacious competitor, a tough kid. He studies the game. I don't think people realize that on all levels, you know, studying the game, understanding the game and getting the game is probably the biggest deal," said Bethel football coach Steve Johnson.
Cornish plays airtight defense. Last season, Cornish intercepted five passes, returning one for a touchdown.
Cornish credits the Bethel coaches for his success.
"I feel that talent is part of it, but that's all God-given. And the rest is the coaches just shaping me and giving me the right defenses and teaching me up on the schemes that other good teams are playing to put me in the position to make plays," said Cornish.
Playing cornerback at any level is tough, but Cornish loves the challenge.
"I think I thrive on that -- to feel that everybody is watching," he said. "Either you're gonna be the one that gets beat on the play or your the one that's gonna make the game-saving play."
