The Tallest Girl To Play At MN Basketball Tourney

(WCCO) At Williams Arena, a cheering crowd watched a basketball game that will make the record books.

The tallest girl ever to play in the girl's high school tournament was on the court.

Amber Dvorak is six-foot-seven.

So far, in Dvorak's best game for Hinckley-Finlayson High School, she earned 41 points and 22 rebounds. Her team took on the heavily-favored Huskies from Albany at the AA-state tourney.

"Kind of felt like I was going to play basketball my whole life," said Dvorak, a basketball center.

She holds up her sneakers and compares her size 16-shoes with a teammate's size 8 sneaker.

Dvorak says when people see her at games, they say, "Oh my goodness you're tall -- exactly like that."

Two of her teammates are above 6-feet tall, and they're in awe of her.

"Just lob it to her cause nobody can stop the ball when it goes up that high cause she is the only one that can get it up that high," said Emily Scholten, Dvorak's teammate.

"My dad is 6'8". My mom is 6'2" and my brother is like 5-(foot)-5," said Amber. Her brother is in the fourth grade.

Dvorak is taller than any player on the Minnesota Lynx. Her height fits right in on the Timberwolves' roster.

Talk about intimidating. One opposing team approximated what it would be like to play Dvorak. They asked a boy who is 6-foot-7 to play against them in practice.

How will opponents guard her at the big show?

"I said it was like playing against a light post ... no matter how high I jump, I can't get to her," said Samantha Larsen, Albany Huskies, Amber's opponent.

Dvorak was asked if her height ever bothered her.

"My mom has always told me, 'be proud of your height. It's what you get and just deal with it.' And I've always been proud," she said.

The high school junior has made a verbal commitment to play ball with the Gophers. She will be the tallest player on that team too.
