Subway Basketball Classic: Minn. 79, American 62

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ― Freshman Kiara Buford came off the bench to score a career-high 22 points and give Minnesota a 79-62 win over American in the opening round of the 2008 Subway Basketball Classic at Williams Arena.

Buford made nine of 14 shots, becoming the first Gopher freshman to score at least 20 points in a game since All-American Janel McCarville scored 23 against Illinois on Jan. 3, 2002.

Minnesota (3-1) never trailed, taking command with a 13-3 run midway through the first half. Buford sparked the run with two driving layups and a three-point basket to give the Gophers a 26-15 lead.

American (3-1) cut the Gopher lead to 40-37 in the second half, but Buford went to work again, scoring on a layup and nailing a long three-pointer from the left wing to help push Minnesota's lead back to 56-43 with 12:20 remaining.

The Gophers play Yale for the Subway Classic championship Sunday.
