Two of the smallest players on the football field at St. Michael-Albertville High School are making a big impact.
Cousins Kwaku Amoah and Osei Bonsu are quick, shifty, versatile halfbacks. They also stand a few inches over five feet tall.
"They hit that line of scrimmage and they hit the hole and you can't find them," said football coach Earl Bauman. "They're in there."
Players #5 and #28 came to the United States at a young age from Ghana. Before they arrived on this side of the Atlantic, they had never once touched a football.
"I grew up playing soccer, that's my first love," said Amoah. "But football looked fun and my friends convinced me one day and I just tried out."
The two live with an aunt and uncle in Albertville. Though they are cousins, they said they feel more like brothers, looking out for each other on and off the field.
"We switch off on different plays. One time I will block and the next time I will run and he'll block. We just have a collaboration going on there," said Bonsu.
No matter which of the two is carrying the football, speed is the key to their success. After all, they can only hide from larger linemen for so long.
"When you are small, you have to be a little faster. So we depend on our speeds, mainly, to run away from people," said Amoah.
Both Amoah and Bonsu have qualified for state in track. The cousins said they plan on attending St. Cloud State next year. Amoah said he would like to play football and Bonsu said he plans on majoring in accounting.
"They are just good kids," said Bauman. "I would have taken them into my home."
