1st Time A Charm For Sibley Basketball At State
(WCCO)
They're one of five high school basketball teams to make it to the state tournament for the first time. So fat the first time's been a charm for the Henry Sibley Warriors who won a spot in Saturday's championship game.
Classes were canceled on Thursday at Sibley High School to give students a chance to see history made.
"This week has been absolutely wild. The kids, the team, the teachers -- they have been so excited. This is the first time we've ever gone to state in basketball," said Vicky Hart, Sibley alumni and teacher.
The enthusiasm built throughout the week.
"We're really happy to be here. We're really excited, we're ready to play. I wish it was2 o'clock right now -- tip off," said Warriors Forward Mike Bruesewitz before the game.
"I'm really jittery, excited ... jumping around. It's hard to sleep ... you just can't wait to get on the floor," said Warriors Guard Peter Leslie.
Before the games, Coach Tom Dasovich gave the team a pep talk.
"You're going to remember it for the rest of you lives. You're going to be talking about it for 20, 30, 40 years," said Dasovich.
According to students, a couple years ago there weren't many fans at the games, but now they took it to a whole new level.
Nearly the entire student body scrambled to fill the stands at the Target Center. As a wave of momentum swept through the crowd, they watched the Warriors move on to the finals on their very first trip to state.
Sibley will meet Minnetonka in the championship game. The teams will tip off at Target Center Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
