Rinks Go Up For Pond Hockey Championships

(WCCO)

Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis is being transformed into a hockey lover's paradise.

Volunteers turned out Saturday to set up 25 plastic rinks for the U.S. Pond Hockey Championships.

About 70 volunteers made the lake look more like a beehive as they set up 25 rinks for what's billed as the world's largest outdoor pond hockey tournament.

Pond hockey is a 4-on-4 format, with no goalie or checking.

Minneapolis PR man and hockey lover, Fred Haberman, founded the event three years ago.

"U.S. Pond Hockey Championships is really a mid-life crisis gone completely out of control for me," said Haberman.

Haberman and his partner spent $70,000 on interlocking plastic rink boards. The boards are set up into 155-foot long ovals and then secured to the ice with long nails.

The rinks will be flooded all week long so they're ready for the 1500 players who love to play the game the old fashioned way.

The three-day event kicks off next weekend and will feature 225 teams from across the country.
