Minnesota Rolls Over Wisconsin 5-2 In WCHA
MADISON, Wis. (AP) ―
Minnesota freshman forward Zach Budish doubled his career goal output Saturday, scoring twice and assisting on another goal as Minnesota beat Wisconsin 5-2 to earn a split of their Western Collegiate Hockey Association series.
Tony Lucia added a goal and two assists as the Golden Gophers rebounded from Friday's 4-2 loss to the Badgers.
Lucia, who finished the weekend with four points, gave the Gophers (3-4-1, 3-4-1 WCHA) a 1-0 lead just 1:17 into the game. Budish made it 2-0 five minutes later, with an assist to Lucia.
Minnesota led despite being outshot 17-6 in the first period. The Badgers enjoyed a 47-28 advantage in shots, but Gophers' goalie Alex Kangas was up to the task with 45 saves.
Brett Bennett made 23 stops for Wisconsin.
Patrick White had a goal and an assist, helping the Gophers snap a three-game losing streak to the Badgers (4-3-1, 2-3-1). White's tally at 15:38 of the second made it 3-0.
Jake Gardiner got the Badgers on the board at 28 seconds of the third period, and the teams exchanged goals from there. Minnesota's Brian Schack scored at 8:31 and Wisconsin's Ryan McDonagh answered at 12:14.
Budish got the game's last goal at 18:59.
Craig Smith had two assists.
