Wild Players Sporting 'Staches For A Good Cause

ST. PAUL (WCCO) ― There are playoff beards and hockey hair, but members of the Minnesota Wild are sporting some mustaches this "Movember" for a good cause.

"I was just trying to grow kind of a straight mustache, keep it, you know, clean and trim and see how long it can go," said Wild forward Cal Clutterbuck. "I originally started out with a bit of the handlebars."

"Movember" is a month-long mustache tribute to gain awareness for prostate cancer. It's especially important to defenseman Nick Schultz.

"A close friend mine from back home, someone I grew up with, his dad has prostate cancer right now, so it's something where he fired me the e-mail about 'Movember' and kind of got me involved and whatever and thought it would be kind of neat if we got the guys here to do it, so the guys kind of grasped it and embraced it," Schultz said.

The "Mo-Bros", as they're referred to, are enjoying their upper lip looks for a good cause and it's also created some off-ice rivalry.

"I think it's a competition to see who can grow the best one," said Wild defenseman Greg Zanon. "That's how we're taking it, is, you know, a fun time to just kind of look silly and I'm always a facial hair guy. Usually it's a full beard, get a good length grown and just keep it as long as I can, until my wife gets mad at me and makes me shave, but this is going for a good cause and it's going to be a fun time. Guys are having a good time with it."

"Mikko [Koivu] stopped me in warm-up the other day, and we had a sign making fun of his mustache, or rather, his attempt at one, so, you know, it's something easy to do so why not do it?" said Wild defenseman Brent Burns. "You look like a little bit of a meatball for a month but it's worth it. It's patchy. I'd say mine's a little patchy."

Having some fun, Clutterbuck borrowed the microphone and interviewed Wild forward Kyle Brodzniak about his 'stache.

"First question," Clutterbuck said. "How long has it been and have you trimmed your mustache?"

"Ah, I think I've been growing it since pretty much right on Nov. 1," Brodzniak replied, laughing. "The only thing I've done to it is cut above the lip line, so the hair doesn't go into my mouth."

"I was going to say, you've got a couple of strays there," Clutterbuck joked.

"It's going all over the place," Brodzniak replied, about his very blonde mustache. "I kind of [cut it] quickly. I don't take too good of care of it."

There's no hair-apparent winner.

"Ah, mine's not too bad," Schultz joked, of his barely-there 'stache. "To tell you the truth, I picked up a little Just For Men the other day to try to touch it up, but it comes in pretty blonde."

"Best mustache? Who's got it right now?" Clutterbuck asked Brodzniak.

"You're our favorite," he replied. "You're one of the favorites for sure."
