Geoff Irwin had a goal and an assist to help No. 17 Minnesota State, Mankato, defeat No. 15 Nebraska-Omaha 4-3 and snap a six-game losing streak Saturday.
Irwin's empty-net goal with 19 seconds remaining was the game-winner, as Omaha added a late goal. Channing Boe, Kael Mouillierat and Trevor Bruess added goals for Mankato.
Minnesota State (9-9-3) grabbed a 2-0 lead midway through the first period when forwards Bruess and Mouillierat scored goals nine seconds apart. The Mankato team record is two goals in a span of seven seconds, which the Mavericks accomplished in 1973-74.
Omaha (12-6-3) came back and tied the game in the second, getting a power-play goal from Matt Ambroz at 3:47 and an even-strengh goal from Jeric Agosta at 10:12.
Boe, a sophomore defenseman, scored his first career goal at 6:50 of the third period to put Mankato ahead again.
Ambroz scored his second goal with seven seconds left in the game.
Mankato goalie Mike Zacharias stopped 17 shots, while Omaha's Jerad Kaufmann made 22 saves.
The game was the first of the schools' Spirit of the Maverick Trophy series. The nonconference opponents play two games for the traveling trophy each season. Omaha currently holds the trophy. The teams will play again on Feb. 24 in Omaha.
