Minn. Duluth Beats Minnesota 3-2 For Sweep

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ― Mike Montgomery scored at 17:58 of the third period as Minnesota-Duluth rallied from a two-goal deficit for the second straight night to beat Minnesota 3-2 Saturday in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

Montgomery took a cross-ice pass and backhanded it off two defenders into the net for the sweep of the two-game series. The Bulldogs (9-4-1, 6-3-1 WCHA) trailed 2-0 on Friday before winning 4-3 in overtime.

"This weekend the bounces went our way," Minnesota-Duluth coach Scott Sandelin said. "As we got going, we got better and better. It ends up being a great weekend for us."

The Golden Gophers (4-7-1, 3-6-1) took a 2-0 lead on first-period goals by Mike Hoeffel and Kevin Wehrs. Wehrs also had an assist.

But Jack Connolly scored his 10th goal and WCHA-leading 21st point of the season in the second period and Kyle Schmidt tied the game at 3:22 of the third. Schmidt picked up the puck in his own zone and skated alone up the left side, firing a slspshot from the top of the circle past goalie Alex Kangas.

It stayed that way until Montgomery scored late in the game.

"It's frustrating," Minnesota coach Don Lucia said. "We have to try to find some ways to win some game."

Kangas had 30 saves for the Gophers.

Brady Hjelle made 36 stops for the Bulldogs.
