Mahtomedi Forced To Forfeit 5 Games
MAHTOMEDI, Minn. (AP) ―
One of the best prep football teams in Minnesota has been forced to forfeit five games.
Mahtomedi High School athletic director Jeff Whisler says that because of an administrative oversight, the Class 4A team used an ineligible player. Under Minnesota High School League rules, the Zephyrs must forfeit their first five games.
He says the player transferred from a foreign country before this school year but never enrolled in the foreign exchange program. He was living with relatives in the Mahtomedi district and is considered a transfer student. Under the rules, a transfer student must sit out one year before participating in activities.
So, the Zephyrs' record goes from 6-1 to 1-6 heading into Wednesday night's season finale.
Mahtomedi had been ranked third in Class 4A in last week's Associated Press poll.
Whisler says the mistake is his fault, and that he's the one who reported it to the league.
