Lot Owners Ban Tailgaters From Having Kegs

(WCCO) For many fans, tailgating before and after grid iron action adds to the whole experience and has become part of the tradition of football game day.

However, this season some tailgaters have run into roadblocks trying to bring kegs into lots near the dome -- lot owners are banning the barrels.

"I was expecting it to be like last year, but it definitely doesn't have the same attitude," said U of M Junior Dan Swendsen.

The city ordinance gives parking lot owners the option of allowing alcohol, including kegs, for tailgating.

Gopher football fans said this season they ran into a keg crackdown.

"This year is really different ... obviously, no kegs are allowed anymore," said U of M Student Macall Stone.

"I don't like it. That's how we show school spirit by going down there and having a good time," said U of M Junior Megan Keifer.

Premier parking representatives said their lots, and most others around the dome, have banned kegs for years.

They don't want to deal with the mess left behind and the long time people spend drinking after games.

Lot owners also don't want to deal with liability issues that go along with people illegally selling beer from kegs, but that doesn't keep people from sneaking them in anyway.

Something that is not as easy now.

"Hopefully it will be better next year when we're at the new stadium," said Swendsen.

Some lots do make special arrangements for Viking fans to have kegs.
