Gopher Athletes Graduation Rates Improve

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ― The NCAA says the graduation success rate of University of Minnesota athletes improved 1 percent this year.

The data released Tuesday showed Golden Gopher athletes had an overall graduation success rate of 72 percent. The number was 71 percent in 2007 and 68 percent in 2006.

The NCAA created its rate in 2005 to take into account student transfers. The federal graduation rate counts any student who transfers as a non-graduate. The federal graduation rate of Minnesota athletes is 60 percent. That's 3 percent below the general student-body rate.

Women continued to out-perform men. Eight of the school's 11 women's varsity programs had rates above 80 percent.

Athletics director Joel Maturi says he's pleased by the progress.
