He's been a hero to the Green Bay Packers, and a nightmare for the Minnesota Vikings for 16 years. Now Brett Favre says he's tired, and after breaking several NFL records last season, it's time to hang up the helmet.
A sad day for Packer fans is a day of joy for rabid Vikings fans; tears and cheers depending on where your allegiance lies.
On Favre's last game at the Metrodome, Vikings fans had to endure his throw to break the NFL's all time touchdown passing record.
"I guess we're just jealous, we're jealous of about having a really good quarterback," said Jake's Sports Bar Chef Pauly Fohrenkamm.
So on the day he retired, this hard core Vikings fan said he speaks for most when he says:
"It's about time we lost that guy over there," said Fohrenkamm.
In River Falls, Wis. it's easy to track down Packer fans, even by a custom Packer license plate.
"I figured '4' for Brett Favre, if I could get that that would be fantastic because that's Brett Favre's number and then 'for' of course Green Bay Pack," said Packer fan Connie Cramer.
And the news of Favre's retirement hits hard.
"It pulls at the old heart strings a bit," said River Falls Community College student Andy Thompson. "He's the heart and soul of the Packers."
But no one is more heartbroken today than WCCO-TV editor Kari Postotnik.
"It's rough, it's a tough day," she said.
Her edit bay is a shire to Favre with pictures, a jersey and lots of Packer knick-knacks.
"Someone gave me frozen tundra and a cute picture of Favre," said Postotnik.
Despite his accomplishments, Vikings fans are quick to point out Favre's last throw of his career was an interception.
"Did you bring that up just to make me angry?" asked Postotnik.
Maybe co-workers are piling it on a bit think after plastering a picture of Favre with the word "quitter" on her edit bay door.
