Duck Hunting Declines In Minnesota, Nation

ST. PAUL (AP) ― New numbers confirm that Minnesota's duck last fall wasn't that ... well, ducky.
  
A preliminary survey from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says Minnesota hunters killed 564,000 ducks last year. That's down 12 percent from the year before.
  
The number of hunters continued a decade-long decline, dropping another 5 percent to 70,200.
  
Department of Natural Resources waterfowl biologist Steve Cordts says he's concerned about the decline in duck hunters but thinks some may have switched to pheasant and not stopped hunting. Pheasant numbers were high last year.
  
Minnesota's numbers reflect a national trend in fewer hunters.
  
But Wisconsin is bucking the trend with both more hunters and more ducks killed. The number of hunters grew slightly to 61,000 last year. They killed 431,000 ducks, or 7 percent more than in 2006.
