Zenyatta Awaits Breeder's Cup Classic Against Boys

Zenyatta Ready Waiting To Run Against The Boys In Saturday's Race

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) ― Long shots have ruled on opening day of the Breeders' Cup, with European horses winning twice and U.S.-based horses taking two races.

Friday's six races went off without defending Ladies' Classic champion Zenyatta, who was back in her barn awaiting Saturday's $5 million Classic against the boys. She will put her 13-0 winning streak on the line in the 1 1/4-mile race, the richest in North America.

It was the second consecutive Breeders' Cup to be run on Santa Anita's synthetic Pro-Ride surface, which kept stellar filly Rachel Alexandra away. She was 8 for 8 this year, including three wins over male horses. But her owner Jess Jackson doesn't like synthetics, so he shut down Rachel Alexandra, who is favored to win Horse of the Year honors in January.
