Former Gopher Billy Bye Dies In Boating Accident

(WCCO) Gopher great Billy Bye passed away in a boating accident on Bay Lake, according to University of Minnesota Athletics Director Joel Maturi.

The Friday accident happened around 3 p.m. Bye's pontoon motor got tangled up in a buoy. He jumped in and untangled it in 2 feet of water.

Then the boat drifted and he couldn't get back on. Another boater pulled him out of the water.

He was given CPR, but later died. The water was about 60 degrees.

Bye played football for the Gophers and was scheduled to be an honorary captain at the first game in the new Gopher stadium.
