Hundreds of friends and team mates have joined family members at a Miami church to say their final farewells to University of Connecticut football player Jasper Howard who was stabbed to death last weekend.
Howard was fatally stabbed outside a university-sanctioned dance early Sunday; hours after helping the Huskies to a homecoming game win over Big East foe Louisville, reports CBS station WFOR-TV in Miami.
During UConn's game against West Virginia on Saturday, the Mountaineers wore helmet stickers with Howard's number, 6, to honor him. Before the game there was a moment of silence for Howard known as to friends and team mates as "Jazz".
Nobody has been charged with Howard's stabbing. Police say they have made "significant progress" in the investigation, but are still seeking photos and videos of the crime scene from the public. Tipsters have given detectives video images that might lead to an arrest, police said Wednesday.
"It is known that other video and images exist that need to be reviewed," UConn Police Chief Robert Hudd said in a statement.
In South Florida, Edison Senior High School was packed last Wednesday night at a tribute to Howard. Edison is where Howard went to high school.
His girlfriend Daneisha Freeman was there.
"He was really excited, very excited that he was going to have a child," said Freeman. "He was like, 'Oh my God, I can't believe that I'm going to have a little girl.' That's what he told me on the night before his game."
Freeman bears no ill feelings toward the culprit, but does want justice.
"Just justice, I don't feel anger toward anyone or anything, I just hope that they catch the person that did it," she said.
Howard's funeral is being held at the New Birth Baptist Church in Miami. The burial will follow at Dade Memorial Park.
