Olympian Wrestler Deitchler Ditches Gophers

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ― Olympic wrestler Jake Deitchler won't wrestle for the University of Minnesota after all. He told the Gophers not to expect him this fall.

Deitchler told the St. Paul Pioneer Press in Beijing he "wants to be the best in the world" and will move instead to the U.S. Olympic training center in Colorado for his development.

In a statement released by the school, coach J Robinson said he was disappointed with Deitchler's decision "not to honor his commitment" and hoped he would reconsider. Robinson said there's still a scholarship waiting for Deitchler should he choose to come.

The 18-year-old from Anoka finished 12th in his weight class at the Greco-Roman competition in Beijing last week.
