Good To Know: No Punishment For Online Bullying

(WCCO) In the midst of all the Hollywood news lately, one Los Angeles case has flown under the radar. A Missouri girl killed herself after a neighbor's mother bullied her on her MySpace page. Don Shelby says it might be good to know what happened to the accused.

Nothing. A federal judge threw out a lower court conviction of the woman.

The accused woman wanted to embarrass the girl next door and created a fake boy's identity. The fake boy, written by the woman, courted the girl and then dumped her, publicly, on the Web site.

Shortly after, the girl hanged herself in embarrassment and despair. The final message from the fake boy, written by the woman, was that the world would be a better place without the girl, named Megan.

The judge, in throwing out the case, said to find her guilty would be to find guilty all people who misuse the Web site.

I disagree with the judge. It would be my inclination to round up everyone who bullies and embarrasses a child resulting in their suicide that they should spend the rest of their natural lives under the jail.
