On Monday night we reported that two adults drowned trying to rescue a struggling child in the choppy waters of Pokegama Lake in Grand Rapids. Don Shelby couldn't let this story go without comment.
A child, without a life vest, was in the water, struggling in the 40-mile per hour wind gusts.
Two men on shore, 63-year-old Albert Hermiston and Nathan Junker who was 30, tried to swim out to help the child.
They brought with them a life vest. It worked. The child made it to safety.
Junker and Hermiston did not make it. They are dead and a child lives.
Hermiston leaves behind his loved ones, and Junker, a youth minister at his church, leaves behind a wife, three young daughters and a newborn son.
There is no way of knowing why these men put everything on the line that Sunday night, but they did. They gave their lives so a child they'd never met might live.
I have a sense that the gates of heaven will swing wide on the arrival of these two guys.
