Phoenix: Pictures From The North Pole Of Mars

The unmanned NASA probe Phoenix landed on Mars on May 25, 2008, to begin a three month exploration of the Martian North Pole. These are some of the first pictures of the Polar region from the surface, sent by the lander with hours of a near perfect landing. The mission will be finished before Fall arrives in Earth because the oncoming Martian winter will put the pole into a deep freeze, covering the Phoenix in a blanket of carbon dioxide ice.

The polar landscape of Mars, taken by the Phoenix lander shortly after it touched down in the Martian polar region on May 25, 2008. Color information was included in the pictures sent within hours of the landing, but scientists delayed processing the color so they could get a quick look at the first pictures.
