Minn. Woman's Special Needle Makes Sewing A Snap

BLAINE, Minn. (WCCO) ― Pam Turner remembers laughing when her mother had trouble threading a needle. No matter how much she squinted, she would end up asking young Pam to help her.

But as an adult, Turner started seeing her own friends face the same struggle and give up sewing altogether.

Turner, of Blaine, Minn., has since invented a new needle that may solve that problem for many people.

"Mine has an opening on the side," she explained. "So you drape the thread over it, make it snug, it will go in the hole. You bring it backwards and forward, and then it's locked in. So when you're sewing, it stays in."

She calls it the Spiral Eye needle. She has won several awards for her invention, and she's sold more 25,000 needles this year. Best of all, though, is the reaction she gets.

"Women my age come in tears," she said, "because they can sew again, which they really loved doing and can't. And elderly women are like their independence is back."

There's a Sewing and Quilt Expo at the Minneapolis Convention Center today through Saturday, and Pam Turner's needles will be on display there. She'll be speaking at 3:45 this afternoon.
