Some St. Paul Businesses Not Seeing RNC Boost

ST. PAUL (WCCO) ― There was a lot of talk, but it still remains to be seen if the Republican National Convention will give the Twin Cities, and particularly St. Paul, an economic boost.

One small business, run by a father and his daughter, said they haven't seen any extra traffic.

"He's been down here almost 30 years," said Jennifer Weckman with George's Hot Dogs. "I've been down here since I was a little kid, but since the convention started, I think we've been doing about half as well as we normally do."

Weckman's stand was bumped from its normal location in Rice Park because of the convention. They said their regulars are having a tough time figuring out where they are, but thought conventioneers would make up the difference.

"I think, you know, there was a lot of hype," Weckman said. "It was supposed to be a big economical boost and everyone was going to do really well and that's what we expected and that's what we planned for, so hopefully we can get rid of the stock we bought before the convention."

Workers at Cossetta's in St. Paul said Monday was slow and was not what they had planned for. They hope that with the convention getting back on schedule Tuesday they will start to see more traffic.
