Trial Continues For Texas Man Charged In RNC Case

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ― Jurors in federal court in Minneapolis are considering two views of David Guy McKay, the Texan accused of possessing Molotov cocktails at the Republican National Convention this summer.

Prosecutors used their opening statements Monday to paint a picture of a 23-year-old protester from Austin, Texas, who was bent on destruction and presented a grave risk of serious injury or death to innocent people.

But the defense portrayed McKay as an earnest young man swayed toward violence by the influence of an older activist -- who turned out to be a paid FBI informant. Defense attorney Jeffrey DeGree calls the government's conduct in the case "appalling."

Jurors will decide for themselves. Testimony begins Tuesday.

McKay is charged with making and possessing an unregistered firearm, which is how federal law classifies a Molotov cocktail.

The Republican National Convention was held at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul from Sept. 1 through Sept. 4, 2008.
