8 RNC Protesters Appear In Court For Hearing

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) ― Eight people charged in connection with protesting the Republican National Convention last year appeared in Ramsey County District Court on Thursday.

The eight members of the RNC Welcoming Committee face felony charges of conspiracy to commit riot in the second degree and conspiracy to commit criminal damage in the first degree.

Judge Teresa Warner heard arguments on a variety of motions, including a defense request that all eight cases be consolidated. Defense attorney Larry Leventhal says Warner told the court she'd review legal briefs before making a decision.

The RNC Welcoming Committee had a Web site on which it advocated plans to "Crash the Convention," which was held in September 2008 in St. Paul. The eight defendants were originally charged with committing crimes "in the furtherance of terrorism" -- but those charges were dropped.
