Crew Here For RNC Gets Confiscated Equipment Back

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ― Three videographers from New York City got their equipment back Wednesday after they were stopped and questioned by police while walking in northeast Minneapolis.

The videographers are from the Glass Bead Collective, an organization with a history of documenting police misconduct. They are in the Twin Cities to cover the Republican National Convention.

Videographer Vlad Teichberg said he and two others were stopped early Tuesday morning while walking to where they were staying in northeast Minneapolis.

Teichberg said police violated the group's First Amendment rights by taking items including a video camera, a still camera and a laptop.

"They are confiscating the means for us to do our work," he said.

Their lawyer, Bruce Nestor, told the Star Tribune their equipment was returned Wednesday morning.

Minneapolis police spokesman Bill Palmer said the incident happened at 1:40 a.m. and that the group was stopped on suspicion that they were trespassing in a nearby railroad yard.

The equipment is part of the ongoing investigation into the incident, he said, which is being treated as a trespassing/homeland security matter.

Palmer also said the officers appears to have acted reasonably and would have stopped anyone seen near transportation infrastructure late at night.

According to GOP.com, the Republican Party was born in the early 1850's by anti-slavery activists and individuals who believed that government should grant western lands to settlers free of charge. In 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected as the first Republican Party president.
