Code Pink Protesters Get Inside Xcel Center
ST. PAUL (WCCO) ―
A group of protesters called Code Pink is getting a lot of attention for being able to get inside the convention Wednesday night.
Code Pink is a group of mostly women that are against the Iraq War.
Two members of the group managed to get right down by the stage inside the Xcel Energy Center Wednesday night and were within 30 feet of Gov. Sarah Palin as she was speaking. They tried to pull out a banner protesting the war, but Secret Service grabbed them.
They were hauled up the stairs and briefly detained, but not arrested.
Medea Benjamin and Jodi Evans said they got into the Xcel Energy Center by asking people who were leaving the Center if they could have their credentials. A person gave them two passes.
They said they tried to look Republican by wearing suits over their pink protest outfits. They say no one stopped them as they got to the area right by the stage.
"We try to disrupt the show or politics as usual," protester Jodi Evans said.
The protest did not interrupt the Governor's speech. The Republican National Convention press office did not return phone calls from WCCO-TV.
